Volunteer System :
For some time now the Cape Reptile Institute has run a variety of courses including the Practical Field Studies Course. However, this latter course is rather intense and geared toward serious students who wish to further their career.
It has now become clear, due to the many communications that we receive, that there is a demand for a more casual approach. Consequently, we have now developed a volunteer system where participants from overseas can come and experience South Africa's herpetofauna in a more relaxed manner.
As a volunteer you would assist with fieldwork in the Little Karoo, plus also at the various study sites in the Western Cape; including De Hoop Nature reserve. Other duties include assisting at the snake handling courses and also working with captive reptiles.
A volunteer can also participate in the accredited snake-handling course if they so wish.
You can also help deal with 'problem' snakes.
The period of visit is 1-3 months. There will also be time allowed to visit tourist spots if you so wish, but at the volunteer's expense.
The volunteer system runs from August through to May.
